A Wild Coastline and Even Wilder Sealife
Known for beautifully undulating coastline attracting a wealth of wildlife, laid-back Monterey is on a small peninsula. Though now more famous for Monterey Jack cheese, it was once an important sardine fishing town. Some former canning factories now house galleries and shops on a street renamed Cannery Row after a novel by John Steinbeck. A museum and his former home in nearby Salinas can be visited.
The fantastic Monterey Bay Aquarium houses a fascinating range of local sealife, which is so prevalent here that you can often see seals basking on craggy beaches, or sea lions roaring away under piers in Fisherman’s Wharf. Whalewatching tours also depart from here.
South is the Monterey State Historic Park, site of historic buildings including Custom House and the Old Whaling Station with a path made from whalebone. To the east are a couple of Monterey hotels on the beach on Booking.com, and there are also several Monterey hotels with indoor pools.
Right by Monterey Peninsula Airport is one of the city’s 7 golf courses, and there are 3 golf courses near the Laguna Seca Raceway.
Whether you’re here for the Monterey Jazz Festival, or for driving the Big Sur Pacific coast road to the south, if you’re staying with kids, don’t forget to check out the Dennis the Menace Park.

Always have enjoyed my trips to Monterey.
Always have enjoyed my trips to Monterey. The eateries on the pier are all top notch and the boats are fun to watch. I'll back this Sunday to watch professional Independent baseball when the Bakersfield Train Robbers visit the Monterey Amberjacks at Sollecito Park.. Go Bakersfield! My only negative about Monterey are the homeless people on the pier and wandering the parking lots. What a beautiful and breathtaking spot in California to visit. So much to see and do. Make sure to add extra time to your visit.. also, don’t forget to visit Carmel Valley and the Village there. Did not visit the aquarium this visit - but it is a must for first-time or any visitors. We visited several points of interest, ie, seal pupping area, Old Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row and of course 17 mile drive. Springtime is beautiful for ocean waves and flowers throughout the city. We love to just walk around admiring the scenery. The downside is the parking which is overly expensive in my opinion and it seems like the meter maids are quite happy to jump on an expired meter immediately. Monterey has ALWAYS been a favorite destination and still is. It's a little slice of heaven for us. First stop, the Wharf for clam chowder!! It's a good time strolling down the Wharf. Nice place to go for mini vacation.
Nice place to go for mini vacation. Best foods at Tarpy's, never a disappointment. Fisherman's Grotto is another good place to eat. Fun activity is whale watching but not for people who gets seasick. Was planning to go to Monterey Aquarium but admission is too expensive for us. Overall, Monterey is a good place to go for mini vacation.Guest review byGJDBUnited States
